Dear Mr. Joel,
First and foremost, thank you so much for taking the time to read this letter. I imagine you get letters like these by the sackful on a daily basis, so I’ll try to keep it as short as possible. So allthough I really could never stop telling the world (and so especially you) how big my admiration for you is and how thankful I am for the influence it was on me as a person and as a musician, I think it’s best I get to the point as quick as possible.
My name is Alexander, I live in Holland, I am a musician (pianist/singer) and became one in huge part because of your music. I started off professionally when I was 16 (I am 49 years old now) and allthough I didn’t succeed in getting my original material out there, I managed to have a fine carreer so far by playing all sorts of venues in front of all sorts and sizes of crowds and make a decent living out of it.
However, for a big fan of your music like myself, I saw not enough opportunity to actually perform your repertoire in the circuit I play for my daily work and so a few months ago I decided to start a tribute band. I surrounded myself with great musicians and a crew and we kicked the project off with a try out. It was a fabulous experience, the crowd went wild and so I decided to take the endeavour on step further, seen as I seem to be the first real Billy Joel Tribute Band in Holland.
At this stage of the process, I am getting us booked as much as possible in the best possible venues here in the Netherlands, such as theatres and clubs.
I would love to show you some live recordings of the band:
(This is the promo video, which I subtitled for your convenience, below there are some complete songs…)
My humble question would be, should you appreciate what we are doing with your music, if you could send me some sort of verbal endorsement. A simple iPhone recording of 10 seconds in which you say something like “Alexander’s Billy Joel Experience is a must see” (or any variation on that theme :-)), would be utterly fantastic. I think it could make the difference between 200 visitors and 1000 visitors per venue… indeed… it would mean a different carreer for me…
And in the end: apart from being a life changing event for me personally, it would mean more people being connected to your music, listening to your music, streaming your music, enjoying your music over here in The Netherlands. And I think that must be the very first goal for any tribute band.
I thank you again from the bottom of my heart for your time and hope to hear from you! You can send your answer to firstname.lastname@example.org
